Baylor College of Medicine researchers helped to conduct scientific experiments to assess CBD’s potential therapeutic properties for dogs with arthritic pain. The results of their studies on CBD for dogs could pave the way for similar human experiments. Researchers focused on arthritic dogs as their health condition closely resembles human arthritis characteristics. Featured in the PAIN journal, the study showed in mouse models and lab tests that cannabidiol can considerably reduce the creation of immune cells and inflammatory molecules related to arthritis. Subsequently, it showed that cannabidiol improved the standard of health of dogs with arthritis. Veterinarian and dog owner assessments support the improvements from CBD for pets thereof. This work will support the scientific assessment of cannabidiol for arthritic humans in the future.
As for the corresponding author Matthew Halpert, cannabidiol is quickly becoming more popular for the evidence of its benefits for an array of conditions from anecdotes. In 2019, Baylor College of Medicine was approached to do scientific experiments to find out the capabilities of many cannabidiol items.
In a recent study, Baylor researchers measured cannabidiol’s effect on arthritis-related immune responses in murine and human cells developed in the laboratory. Using CBD tinctures, the researchers discovered that the cannabidiol treatment contributed to less creation of the cells and molecules related to arthritis.
They also found that the impact was faster, more effective as cannabidiol was delivered in an encapsulated form with liposomes than as it was used in a ‘naked’ form. Liposomes are man-made spherical sacs, utilized to deliver substances such as drugs and others to tissues at greater absorption rates.
The researchers, including Halpert, then assessed the effects of liposome-based CBD and naked cannabidiol on the standard of health of dogs with arthritis. Then, Halpert stated that he and his fellow researchers studied dogs as experimental evidence demonstrating that spontaneous arthritis models are more suitable for assessing pain treatments for human arthritis. Halpert added that biological canine arthritis characteristics and human arthritis characteristics are comparable.
Arthritis is still a prevalent condition among dogs. As per the American Kennel Club, arthritis impacts one in five US dogs.
There were twenty dogs in the recent study, and their owners randomly offered them the same drug bottles with a placebo, liposomal CBD or cannabidiol. Neither the veterinarian nor the owners realized which treatment option each dog got.
